What to Bring to Your Driving Test: The Complete Checklist

Turning up to your driving test without the right documents ends your test before it begins — and you’ll still lose your test fee. It’s one of the most avoidable ways for test day to go wrong, and yet it happens regularly.

This guide covers exactly what you need to bring, what you don’t need to worry about, and what happens if something is missing — so on test day, this is one less thing to think about.

The Essentials: What You Must Bring

Your Provisional Driving Licence

Your provisional driving licence is the only document you absolutely cannot forget. You must bring the photocard version — the examiner checks it at the test centre before the test can begin.

If you hold an old-style paper provisional licence, you need to bring both the paper counterpart and a valid UK passport or other approved photographic ID. If you’re in any doubt about which type of licence you hold, check with the DVSA ahead of your test date.

Glasses or Contact Lenses (If You Need Them)

If your driving is dependent on corrective lenses, you must wear them on test day. The first thing the examiner does before getting in the car is an eyesight check — reading a number plate at a set distance. Failing this check ends the test immediately and your fee is lost.

If you wear contact lenses, bring a pair of glasses as a backup. If your prescription has changed recently, make sure you’re using the correct lenses before test day.

Comfortable, Appropriate Footwear

You are legally required to wear appropriate footwear when driving. Flip flops, heels, and shoes with thick or rigid soles that prevent proper pedal feel are not suitable for a driving test. Wear flat, well-fitting shoes — ideally the same pair you’ve been wearing throughout your lessons.

What You Don’t Need to Bring

A lot of last-minute pre-test stress comes from learners trying to track down documents or equipment they simply don’t need. Here’s what you can leave at home:

  • Your theory test pass certificate — the DVSA links your theory pass to your test booking automatically. No physical certificate is required.
  • Your own car — your instructor provides the vehicle for the test.
  • A sat nav — the examiner sets this up for the independent driving section. You do not need your own device.
  • Cash or payment — your test was booked and paid for in advance. Nothing additional is owed on the day.

What Happens If You Forget Your Provisional Licence?

If you arrive at the test centre without your provisional driving licence, the test cannot go ahead. This is a hard rule — the examiner cannot begin the test without verifying your identity and licence status, and there are no exceptions.

In this situation, you will lose your test fee and need to rebook. It is worth taking a photo of your provisional licence in the days before your test as a quick reminder check — but a photograph on your phone is not an acceptable substitute for the physical document on test day.

Tips for Test Day Beyond the Documents

Getting the checklist right is the baseline. These habits make everything else run more smoothly:

  • Confirm your test centre address the day before. It’s easy to assume you know where you’re going — Bishopbriggs, Anniesland, Shieldhall, and Baillieston are all different locations.
  • Eat beforehand. A long practical test on an empty stomach affects concentration more than most people expect.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. Fatigue on test day affects decision-making and reaction time in measurable ways.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early. Being rushed to the test centre is a poor mental start to a 40-minute assessment.
  • Book a pre-test lesson on the morning. A short session on the test routes before your appointment warms you up, puts key junctions fresh in your mind, and settles nerves.
